Critical Mass - Police win appeal!

Despite one of the judges saying that Critical Mass ‘is a perfectly lawful activity, and if, for any reason, it ceases to be so, the police have ample powers to intervene’, the Appeal Court today ruled that Critical Mass is subject to the Public Order Act, which governs processions.

This will mean that unless someone declares themselves the organiser of the event, and submits a route to the police in advance for their approval, the gathering will be illegal. The whole point of Critical Mass is that traditionally it is not organised, and simply a monthly coincidence.

This is a reversal of an earlier High Court decision, which was reported in Moving Target.
