In light of recent events I would like to propose and organize a short film contest tackling the daily dangers of riding. Things which the London Cycle Blah, Police and Ken Blogs dont address. I will be editing and composing it all into a short film for whatever purpose. Im not asking you guys to ride into stuff or have near misses for arts sake, but if you got a camera, dust it off and strap it to yer bike.
Some things to hit on would be: twats turning left without indicating (why is this not illegal?) taxis randomly doing U-turns...esp. without indicating (again, why is this not illegal) car doors swinging open-esp. in cycle lanes pedestrians not looking before stepping into the road
I would like to try and get 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for this (the above), and will keep you posted.
The next category is more fun and dedicated to silly things some cyclists do. Whatever you feel appropriate-bring on the footage of the freewheel trackstand!
So 3 months starting the day this is posted is the deadline. Swoop!
i thought turning in any direction without indication was illegal: MIRROR, SIGNAL, MANOEUVRE!!! i remember that from my driving test. :)
what about cars that, at junctions, stop about a metre past the white line of the junction? (especially those who are waiting to turn onto a major road.) or cars that stop in the cycling box at junctions? (regardless of how you feel about those boxes...) or cars that pass waaaaay to close? or big murphy flat bed lorries that try to squish you up against the kerb on parkway and when you give them the wanker gesture, then chase you up kentish town road? hahahahaa.
Caspar thanks fer the link, think Im gonna use it too. Pikey, aint got no camera either buddy, so I guess renting is the way forward, at least it would be insured if it were to break. Tank, I know its you crazy gal. I did my license in another country so the laws are different, that means you me coffee and a few hundred questions.lol ;) Laura, yea might be interested in BFF. Obviously all contributors would be credited and could win prizes. I just wanna put it all together and make it hit home. Email/whisper me if you keen on collaborating and we can get together and brain storm.
niki, i don't know how i lost you the other night - did you stop at sainsburys? i waited in a sidestreet, but you didn't come, so i carried on home.
anyway, as discussed i will definitely participate in this, but it must wait until i have finished all my school werk. i've got 25,000 words due in 5 weeks, and that has to take precedence. ACK!!!
the other thing is: how the bloody hell much do those cameras cost to rent??? the prices listed must be to buy, surely? if not, that completely and utterly prices me out.
also, i don't wear a helmet, so can i affix to my handlebars? loadsaquestionsme.
point is, me dear, if it can wait until i am a bachelorette, then i'm down.
have to agree with bill there, bars or good, or the headtube. if you fix the cam to the headtube it eliminates some of the movement. the video shows some footage i shot with my phone attached to the bars, bad quality, rubbish tune, but gives you an idea. i personally would mount the cam somewhere with minimum movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H70k38l0VRw
The low camera positioning gives more of a "frenzied" feel to the footage, for a wider perspective I reckon the head mounted camera a-la-Lucas shows more of of the road situation... Also absorbs a lot of the shock, I tried it a while ago with a DV cam on a helmet balanced with a couple of radio batteries, forgot to clean the heads on the cam though... :(
Deadline moved out to mid June 15th. (Wedding plans have consumed our lives!)
In terms of cameras, I found one the size of a lighter or USB stick, which clips onto your clothes, with over 2hrs of constant filming, with decent resolution film quality (300k). If I remember its called 'iSpy' and retails bout £60. Maybe this is helpful or otherwise very useless information mistaken for a sales pitch?! Anyway,
Anyone have any expertise on film stabilizers? Are they primarily internal and integral with certain camera models, or can external ones be fitted onto a camera or mounting bracket?
Moving Target have been kind enough to sponsor cash prizes: 1st - £50 2nd - £20 3rd - £10
There may also be an opportunity to show the top 3 films or top 1st film at this years BFF in October.
All entries are best burnt to disc and posted to me. Entry forms and specifications will be posted up soon-ish :)
